Music: Meditation 1

"Meditation 1" is uniquely adapted to the violin, due to its high and fairly active middle part. This piece is appropriate for a worship service, but it can only be effective if all of the shifts are under one's fingers. It should start quietly with an atmosphere of dignity (A), grow in both activity and volume (B), then allow the activity of (B) to fall away while maintaining all of that section's volume and intensity (C). This is how the violin part ends. The piano is the instrument that allows the energy to dissipate by fading to a quiet ending (D). A lot will depend on the painist controlling the situation in the last few measures. The tempo should fall off just slightly to achieve a full sense of closure at the end. If the piano is going to be business-like at the end and just play off the end of the staff so as to leave enough time for the sermon, it would be better to play something else. What the piano does in section (D) is fully as important as what the violin does at (B).
